conveni TOKYO is a Japanese grocery store tucked away on Heritage Avenue that brings a slice of East Asia to this corner of London NW9. Unlike larger supermarkets, conveni TOKYO offers a compact but thoughtfully curated selection of snacks, sauces, drinks, and essentials like rice, with some items that might remind you of browsing in a kombini back in Japan. It also serves a small but appealing range of hot and fresh takeaway foods—from made-to-order sushi rolls to bento-style boxes like salmon teriyaki and simple chicken curry with rice.

The shop’s size means it feels a bit tight, especially during busier times, but the friendly atmosphere helps offset this. Staff actively engage with shoppers, offering guidance or letting you know you can order something fresh rather than just picking from the shelves. This personal touch makes it less of a sterile grocery run and more of a quick cultural detour for locals or visitors craving authentic flavours.

People who appreciate convenient and straightforward Japanese and broader East Asian groceries will find this spot useful, especially if you’re after fresh sushi or a hot snack on the go. The pricing is generally reasonable, though some shoppers note the place isn’t the cheapest out there, reflecting its specialist offerings.

For those stopping by on their way home or needing a no-fuss dinner fix, conveni TOKYO fits the bill well. Mornings and early evenings are likely quieter, which suits browsing the shelves or grabbing a freshly made bento without feeling rushed. The store’s location makes it a practical option for NW9 residents who want more than the usual supermarket staples without having to venture far.

One point to keep in mind is the limited space and some concerns about food presentation hygiene—like soups displayed uncovered—so those sensitive to such details might want to take a quick look before choosing takeaway.

What an amazing store! This shop is definitely a hidden gem. I stopped in on my way home today to grab some dinner. It was my first time in the shop and I was blown away. I'm not sure I've ever felt so welcome in a shop before. I was greeted when I arrived and while I was browsing at the sushi someone arrived to let me know that if I wanted I could have something made up fresh off the menu. I just grabbed one of the premade rolls because they all looked delicious, and I was not disappointed! Fresh and flavorful! Not to mention reasonably priced as well! As for the rest of the shop, it is absolutely immaculately clean and tidy. I will definitely be a regular customer from now on! Many thanks to the lovely staff working today who made it such a great experience!

This Oriental food store offers a wide range of unique foods and drinks, including a lovely selection of hot takeaway items. The bao in particular is a standout, fresh and delicious. However, I would say the store is on the expensive side and can feel quite cramped due to the limited space. One concern I have is with hygiene—some of the soups are displayed without covers, which I find off-putting. That said, the store does have a quirky and interesting variety of Oriental foods that you don’t often find elsewhere. Worth a visit, but there’s room for improvement.

I’ve missed Japan ever since I moved away, so finding Japanese goods overseas is always a nice surprise. This place is reminiscent of a Japanese kombini, though selling a variety of East Asian foodstuffs (I was surprised to see Pei Pa Koa, a syrup to soothe coughs and sore throats!). The store mainly sells snacks, sauces, drinks and dried goods—bags of rice included. There is a small section selling daikon, spring onions and tofu. As well, sushi takeaway is available, along with oden! Towards the back, you can find a small selection of dish ware and bentō, which can make nice gifts. The freezers contain a variety of interesting things, but what we noticed was the packages of thinly sliced meat, which is ideal for a lot of Japanese meat dishes like nikujaga (it’s not the same with chunks of beef). I wasn’t able to find some things I was looking for, like barley tea, but I understand that they can’t stock everything. Also, I felt that some items were a bit pricey, but that’s to be expected when buying imported goods. Other than that, it was fun browsing the store. The staff was also friendly. If I lived closer, I’d go back more often.

Its great for locals and basics. Has small selection of hot food and sushi such as salmon teriyaki bento boxes (£6.50), chicken curry and rice (not katsu), pork gyozas, some fresh sushi made to order e.g. eel special, salmon avocado roll etc. Prices are very reasonable. Service is always good and welcoming. Min £5 on card.
